SAILING PAST SAMBRO
Watercolour, Nautical Chart and Thread
50 x 50 cm      19 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches

This painting shows a C&C 35 Landfall sailing along the Nova Scotia coast with the owner's previous sailboat, a Tanzer 22 in the background. Inner Sambro Island is on the left, and Sambro Island with the lighthouse is on the right.

One of the challenges in executing this painting was how to make the white sails show up against the chart. The solution I decided on was to paint the watercolour in early evening light, just as the sun is beginning to set, so the sails would be warmly lit.
