This painting depicts a small
vessel of the time taking depths inside Meiseners and Quaker Islands off
Chester in the 1760's. The famous hydrographer J.F.W. DesBarres was the
first to chart these waters. His charts were published in Britain as
The Atlantic Neptune, beginning in 1776. They can be viewed online in
the digitized collections of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich,
England. The chart used as a source is the first one published of what is
now named Mahone Bay, HNS 36A "Mecklenburgh Bay," 1776. |
