CHARTING CHESTER, 1760'S

This painting depicts a small vessel of the time taking depths inside Meiseners and Quaker Islands off Chester in the 1760's. The famous hydrographer J.F.W. DesBarres was the first to chart these waters. His charts were published in Britain as The Atlantic Neptune, beginning in 1776. They can be viewed online in the digitized collections of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England. The chart used as a source is the first one published of what is now named Mahone Bay, HNS 36A "Mecklenburgh Bay," 1776.
 

This painting Is on display at Amicus gallery in Chester. It was painted to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the village of Chester. The other painting is  After the Race, Front Harbour, c.1928. A third painting, Chester Front Harbour 1890's, has been sold and may be seen on the Archive page.
