THE MARTELLO TOWER LIGHTHOUSE AT McNABS ISLAND c. 1930
Watercolour
34.5 x 37 cm      13 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches

The Martello Tower was built in 1814. In 1826, to save the cost of a separate building, a lantern room was placed on top to guide vessels into harbour. The Ordnance Board agreed to this, as long as the light didn't obstruct the cannons. Fortunately, the compatibility of guns and lighthouse was never tested. This lighthouse was replaced by a concrete lighthouse in 1941. The Martello Tower was demolished in 1945. (For more information about this lighthouse visit www.nslps.com, Maugher Beach Lighthouse.)
