APPROACHES TO HALIFAX HARBOUR
Acrylic and Nautical Chart
122 x 205 cm      48 x 80 3/4 inches

This is one of the most interesting and challenging of my commissioned paintings. The home owner wanted a painted wall in a narrow hallway. In discussion, we agreed that it would be wise to execute the painting on another surface so it could be moved, should they change residences. In addition, a watercolour painting did not seem suitable for the area. Apart from other considerations, glazing would be obtrusive. The final work was executed in liquid acrylic on a gesso ground with a masonite support. The whole thing, including the chart, was varnished with UV filtering acrylic. The painting  was framed with narrow wood strips and screwed to the wall.

The painting is an imaginative view of the Halifax area, from Crystal Crescent Beach to Cole Harbour, with the nautical chart Approaches to Halifax Harbour in the center. I attempted to design it so that if the panels were ever separated each would be a successful painting in its own right.
